Who is in your lingerie crew?

This week I wanted to do a shout out to our gorgeous lingerie crew who all keep the industry so fierce on Instagram. These ladies are taking over our feeds with their daily dose of lingerie and fun.

I did and interview 3 of these lovely ladies who make our feeds forever filled with frilly knickers @mylingerieaddiction, @kittenlebow and @thelingeriecourtier to find out all about their lingerie shopping tips and their favourite lingerie memories and so much more!

My Lingerie Addiction - Lingerie addiction since 2003!

What was your earliest memory that sparked your interest lingerie?

My earliest memory that sparked my interest in lingerie would be movies. I grew up watching movie musicals from the 50s and the dance costumes were often lingerie styled. Beaded corsets, flowing robes and of course...stockings! I remember also as a young teen sneakily watching the 'naughty' movies on SBS! I got to see lingerie as seen in sex scenes. I vividly remember something set in the 1800s with a girl wearing thigh high white stockings and ruffled garters. I fell in love with the look and hunted down pieces from op shops first. Since I was studying performing arts at the time I could get away with purchasing lingerie and calling it a 'costume' when I was a young teen. It just grew from there.

Im a sucker for mesh and lace, what is it about lingerie that you love?

I love that lingerie can transform the way you feel about your own body. When I was younger I wanted my petite frame to look more grown up. I always looked so much younger than what I was and I wanted to look like an adult. So I opted for push up bras with extra padding to enhance my B cups. I broke away from basics and embraced dressing up.  It made me feel better about my body at the time. I could create a character, underneath my clothing, that made me feel more in control. More feminine. More beautiful. Then I started to experiment with styles and found that I started to like my own natural shape. I just needed to dress it in the best way. I found I really liked lace, once I found good quality fabrics that were comfortable on my skin. Now that Im a very different size to what I was then, I havent lost that style I developed in my 20s. Lace or embroidered tulles are my favourite. Black and also strappy!

How did you come up with your Instagram handle?

My Instagram handle was actually the password I used on my very first email address many many years ago. I used the name My Lingerie Addiction to start a lingerie blog to share the information that floated around my head and no one but clients wanted to hear! I worked full time in the lingerie industry as a professional fitter and previous to that an indy designer so I didnt want to reveal my identity. It was a scary thing to do if people could find me at work. It was an anonymous account where I could share my secret addiction to pretty underthings.

What advise do you have for those wanting to get into the lingerie community in Instagram?

For those who are keen to join, I just say DO IT! You can be completely anonymous, thats the best thing about it. You don't have to show your face. You can post whatever you like. Just make sure if you want to remain anonymous that you set up a new email and don't have any links to your personal FB etc. And if you don't want to post, thats also completely fine! You can still join the conversations or peruse accounts for lingerie that you may like to wear yourself. I have met so many women who don't and wont ever post lingerie photos but they are some of the biggest lingerie fanatics around. You don't have to post, to be part of the community.

Can you let us in on your best kept lingerie shopping secret?

Years ago I shared my eBay designer lingerie hunts with my followers. Im sad to say for me.... it means that desire and pricing has gone up so I just cant find the bargains I once did! I often end up in a bidding war with a friend! We now try and share what we are bidding on so we don't bump up the price too much. Now others are also willing to purchase second hand lingerie in order to own amazing designer pieces. Back then, not many people did!

What's your most coveted piece in your lingerie collection?

My most coveted piece in my collection has to be my La Perla Black Label silk erotic print, feather bustled corset! It is pure costume type extravagance and I have only worn it once. It now sits on a mannequin like art work in my house. It is so completely unique and I know that I will never see anything like it ever again. It wasn't about trend, it was about pushing the boundaries in design.

Where did you shoot your favourite pics?

My favourite lingerie picture was shot on the floor of my studio! Im not a lingerie model at all so I take my own photos, at home, with a wireless camera. It's just my reality.

What do you think the future holds for the online lingerie community?

As the lingerie community grows, more body acceptance spreads. We have a more diverse portrayal of people in lingerie. No longer just visually seeing a model in a lingerie campaign or only a model type body wearing lingerie on social media, we see all different people wearing and enjoying lingerie. It is changing the industry as brands are paying attention to this more honest way of spreading word about who they are and what they can bring to the table. We are seeing the community changing the way lingerie is advertised and a broader range of people now buying lingerie. It's amazing to have watched this growth over the years. It can only go up from here.

Kitten Le Bow - Red haired adventurer

What was your earliest memory that sparked your interest lingerie?

I remember being so small that I could only just see myself in my mother's dressing table mirror. I would hold her slips against my body like a dance teacher demonstrating ballroom posture, the fabric pooling on the floor at my feet. As I grew into my teenage years, I collected vintage pieces from op shops and lingered in lingerie stores, walking the aisles with my fingers falling over the racks with longing, the pieces I longed for were well beyond my allowance. For most of my adult life, I was incredibly self-conscious about my body and lingerie gave me the power to transform how I looked and felt in my skin.

Im a sucker for mesh and lace, what is it about lingerie that you love?

I have an incredibly diverse lingerie collection. Sweet vintage pin up styles through to black elastic straps and leather harnesses. Whimsical floral patterns and the sheen of latex. Stockings and gowns for layering and the sheerest of nude mesh and open cuts. I love it all! The constants over time have been silk - I am an incredibly tactile person - lace and suspender belts. Perhaps that goes with my fondness for burlesque. I think there is an intoxicating power in the act of undressing.

How did you come up with your Instagram handle?

It's a long story, but a very, very dear friend had nicknamed me Kitten in homage to the Gaslight Anthem song, Great Expectations. Despite how sweet it sounds, the lyric itself is less than flattering! People are highly amused when I tell them that I do love cats - but am highly allergic to them. The 'Le Bow' is a nod to a lifelong obsession of mine, which is also referenced in the polka dot bow tattoo on my wrist. A lot of people misread it as 'Kitten Elbow' which always makes me laugh, or mistake the pronunciation as taking a bow on stage. It started as the name I use with the Paper Dolls Dance Studio and carried over to Insta when I started an account for my alter ego (most authentic self!).

What advise do you have for those wanting to get into the lingerie community in Instagram?

Our community is very welcoming and enormously inclusive, but we do have a great bullshit radar! Join us because you are genuine. Leave the drama at home. Back the people around you - empowered women empower women. And, most importantly, be brave enough to be yourself. This world benefits enormously from us sharing our real, unadulterated, diverse, beautiful bodies and our authentic stories. You are enough. Exactly as you are. You just have to start. You can sit with us.

Support small, indie labels! They are the definition of passion. They source the most beautiful fabrics, work solidly on perfecting their patterns and bring new ideas and looks into your collection. Often, their pieces can be custom made to fit your body like a dream and suit your style to a T. Don't be afraid to source them online. If you reach out, they will give you a supported shopping experience and you can be sure that it will be just right when it arrives on your doorstop. The best part? You'll get a buzz out of supporting someone to live their dream.

What's your most coveted piece in your lingerie collection?

I love so many of my pieces like children, but my favourite would have to be my Bordelle waspie. Not only was donning it for the first time an incredibly transformative experience, but it also brought me into the world of My Lingerie Addiction. It took a few more months and a few brave adventures, but my life changed forever - and for the better - after that piece came home with me.

Where did you shoot your favourite pics?

I have been incredibly fortunate to shoot in many amazing places. I love the artistry of the studio, but honestly, the adventurer in me can't go past a location shoot. I am child-like and filled with joy and completely in the moment on location. I have shot in forests, bars, city streets and rugged coastlines, but Mushroom Rocks, Noosa, Gatton and Byron Bay are particular favourites.  Broken Head beach has a piece of my soul, I think. I have grown so much in those waters.

What do you think the future holds for the online lingerie community?

I have personally found joining the community to be the single most influential act of my life. I know that sounds extreme, but it has honestly led me to people and places and experiences that have changed who I am and what I want. In finding my tribe, I found myself and the confidence to be that person. I really think it has enormous power to influence our perspectives of our bodies and enhance our capacity to support one another. I hope that we see more and more people join the space so that everyone can see a body they relate to - inclusive of all shapes, sizes, colours, genders, sexual orientation. And then? I hope the broader community follows our lead. All bodies are good bodies.

@thelingeriecourtier - A mystery in lingerie

What was your earliest memory that sparked your interest lingerie?

I think the old Pleasure State collections first drew my attention and interest! The early designs by Kay Cohen were beautiful and not like anything I'd seen before where I grew up.

I'm a sucker for mesh and lace, what is it about lingerie that you love?

It's definitely the transformative nature of lingerie. Cover me in black Bordelle and I feel like a badass or contrast that with a super girlie set by Dita Von Teese when I'm feeling adventurous.

How did you come up with your Instagram handle?

I wanted to play up the historical connotations about sex and lingerie. I wanted it to be thelingeriecourtesan initially but felt there were to many negative connotations associated with courtesan.

What advise do you have for those wanting to get into the lingerie community in Instagram?

Just do it! Lingerie girls tend to be the friendliest most inclusive bunch of girls.

Can you let us in on your best kept lingerie shopping secret?

Look for spelling errors in Ebay listings or try setting your searches to worldwide. La Perla is really affordable on Ebay!

What's your most coveted piece in your lingerie collection?

I finally got the Bordelle bodysuit of my dreams but it doesn't fit. Now I just stare at it's beauty. Mylingerieaddiction and I have a deal if I ever want to sell it's hers!

Where did you shoot your favourite pics?

I think my new favourite ones might be a nude shoot I spontaneously did with Camattreephoto after crashing his shoot with Kittenlebow! I can't wait to see all the images!

What do you think the future holds for the online lingerie community?

I hope it just keeps getting bigger and better! I love these ladies and I can't wait to see who else I get to meet!
